Kenny Phillips Lost For Season

Days after the best game of his career, where he picked off Tony Romo twice, Kenny Phillips was placed on the injured reserve forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. Phillips had knee problems from training camp but had planned to play through it as he showed he could do Sunday; however the knee worsened and the Giants were fearful that if he continued to play it could affect him down the road and hinder an otherwise promising career.

This is a big blow for both the Giants and Kenny Phillips. Phillips appears to be a good guy and a smart football player who loves the game and wants to become one of the premier safeties in the league. His work definitely showed as he seemed to take a big step forward from an already promising rookie season, making great plays in coverage and great tackles in run support. According to Coughlin after Phillips was told his season was over he became very upset and down, with teammates trying to console him. This guy was a class act and a hell of a football player so hopefully he can work this problem out and come back better next season.

For the Giants they have another big injury to deal with for a defense that is already without Aaron Ross, Chris Canty, Kevin Dockery, Clint Sintim, and possibly Justin Tuck. Phillips was really emerging as a leader in the secondary and his replacement C.C. Brown is a huge step back as anyone who watched the preseason games can note. The secondary already has undrafted rookie Bruce Johnson as the nickel this injury could cause some major problems in coverage. It will be interesting to see if Sheridan the defensive coordinator makes any adjustments, with Brown having limitations the Phillips didn’t. Hopefully the Giants can get through this relatively soft part of their schedule with wins as the players work their way back from injury.

  1. I agree, Phillips is a big part of our D and unlike other spots like the D Line, our backups aren’t really up to par… Luckily, we have some easier games ahead of us and it gives our guys time to not only get healthier, but for guys like C.C. to step up and plug the holes.
